Lead, MQL and SQL: what is a qualified lead

Not every lead is ready to buy. Understand what differentiates a qualified lead and why it matters so much.

In the world of marketing and sales, terms like lead, MQL, and SQL are common, but not always clear. Understanding them is important because they help distinguish the stage of interest and readiness of each contact, allowing for appropriate treatment. Not all leads are equal, and knowing how to differentiate them is essential to avoid wasting opportunities or effort.

In this guide, you will understand what a lead is, the difference between MQL and SQL, and why qualifying leads matters.

What is a lead

A lead is a contact who has shown some interest in the brand and provided their information, becoming a potential customer with whom a relationship can be built. For example, someone who fills out a form, downloads material, or signs up becomes a lead. The lead is the starting point of the relationship: a person who has emerged from anonymity and signaled interest. But a lead can be at very different stages of readiness to buy, and that's where qualifications come in.

Not all leads are equal

A common mistake is treating all leads the same way, as if everyone is ready to buy. In reality, leads vary widely: some have just started to show interest, while others are advanced and close to deciding. Treating everyone equally leads to two problems: approaching with a sale someone who isn't ready (and pushing them away) or failing to give attention to someone who is ready (and losing the opportunity). That's why it makes sense to classify leads according to their stage, and that's what the MQL and SQL concepts do.

What is an MQL

MQL stands for Marketing Qualified Lead. It is a lead that has shown enough interest and engagement to be considered promising, but is still being worked on by marketing, usually being nurtured, and is not yet ready for a sales approach. The MQL is a lead that has "warmed up" enough to deserve special attention, but still needs development before being passed to sales. It's an intermediate stage: interested and promising, but not yet ready to close.

What is an SQL

SQL stands for Sales Qualified Lead. It is a lead that has progressed sufficiently and demonstrated readiness to be approached by the sales team with a focus on closing. The SQL is the lead that has gone through nurturing, matured their interest, and is now at the point of receiving a direct commercial approach. The transition from MQL to SQL represents the moment when the lead stops being worked on solely by marketing and begins to be treated as a real sales opportunity. It's the lead ready for the commercial stage.

Why qualifying leads matters

Qualifying leads (distinguishing MQL from SQL, and both from initial leads) matters because it allows you to treat each contact appropriately for their stage and direct effort where it's most worthwhile. This way, marketing nurtures those who need to mature, and sales focuses its energy on those who are ready, without wasting time on those who aren't yet. This makes the entire process more efficient: more conversions, less wasted effort, and a better experience for the lead, who is approached at the right time. Qualification is what makes working with leads intelligent.

The alignment between marketing and sales

An important value of these concepts is aligning marketing and sales. By clearly defining what an MQL and an SQL are, the two areas begin to speak the same language and have common criteria for when a lead is ready for sales. This avoids conflicts (sales complaining about bad leads, marketing thinking sales isn't taking advantage) and makes the lead handoff more fluid and effective. This shared definition is the basis for good integration between marketing and sales, which is essential for converting leads into customers.
