How to optimize a page for SEO (on-page)

The on-page adjustments that help Google understand and rank your content. A practical on-page SEO checklist.

On-page SEO is the area over which you have complete control: these are the optimizations made within your own pages to help Google understand the content and consider it relevant for the right searches. Done well, on-page is one of the most direct ways to improve rankings.

In this guide, you'll find a practical checklist of the main on-page optimization elements, from the title to internal links, to get your pages ready to rank.

What is on-page optimization

On-page optimization is the process of adjusting a page's internal elements to improve its performance in search engines. This includes both what the user sees (content, titles, images) and what's behind the scenes (meta tags, structure). The goal is twofold: to make it easier for Google to understand what the page is about and to ensure it responds well to the searcher's intent.

The title (title tag)

The title is one of the most important on-page elements. It's what appears as the clickable blue link in Google's search results. A good title includes the main keyword, clearly communicates the page's topic, and sparks click-through interest. Since space is limited, it's worth being objective and placing the most relevant information at the beginning. Each page should have a unique title, avoiding repetition across pages.

The meta description

The meta description is the short text that appears below the title in the search results. While not a direct ranking factor, it influences the click-through rate: an appealing and clear description convinces more people to click. Use the space to summarize the page's value and include the keyword, which usually appears highlighted when it matches the search query.

The friendly URL

Short, descriptive, and readable URLs help both users and Google understand what the page is about. A good URL contains the keyword, avoids meaningless numbers and codes, and uses hyphens to separate words. Compared to a long URL full of strange characters, a clean URL conveys more trust and is easier to share.

The headings (H1, H2, H3)

Headings organize content into a hierarchy that helps readers and search engines understand the page's structure. The H1 is the main title of the content (usually one per page), and H2 and H3 divide the text into sections and subsections. In addition to improving readability, a good heading structure, with keywords used naturally, reinforces the page's themes to Google.

Content and keywords

Content is the heart of on-page. It needs to answer the search intent with depth and clarity, using the main keyword and related terms naturally. A warning here: stuffing the text with repeated keywords (the old practice of keyword stuffing) harms rather than helps. Google understands synonyms and context, so write for people, using keywords where they make sense.

Images and alt text

Images enrich content but need to be optimized. This includes compressing files to avoid slowing down page speed and filling in the alternative text (alt text), which describes the image to Google and to people who use screen readers. Alt text helps the search engine understand the image and provides an additional opportunity for relevance, besides improving accessibility.

Internal links are links from one page on your site to another. They help Google discover and understand the relationship between your pages, distribute authority throughout the site, and keep users navigating. When creating content, point links to other relevant pages on your site, using descriptive anchor texts. A good internal linking structure strengthens the site as a whole.

Quick on-page checklist

To review a page, check for: unique title with the keyword; appealing meta description; clean and descriptive URL; single H1 and good heading hierarchy; deep content aligned with intent; keywords used naturally; optimized images with alt text; and relevant internal links. Going through this checklist already puts the page far ahead of most.
